Eating “Healthy”

Dear health freaks, wanna-be health freaks, and others:

Sure, if you have to choose between McDonalds, and Whole Foods, go for the latter.  But if you really want to be eating healthy, cook for yourself, and learn some recipes.  No matter how healthy looking, or good-tasting the food is, it’s always better to prepare it yourself so you know exactly what is in it. For example, the soups at whole foods.  Everyone loves soup, but no one really knows how to make it.  Whole Foods has soups? Everyone buys soup at Whole Foods.  You don’t know how much oil, sodium, animal fat, etc. is actually in that soup, even though they list the ingredients.  In addition, the people making this soup aren’t making it for themselves, so they don’t take as much consideration when preparing it.

If you’re a germ freak, it’s better to make your own salads, given you have time, instead of going to a salad bar.  This way you ensure that all of the vegetables are organic, fresh, and washed properly.  You can also add your own ingredients and make your own dressing that the salad bar may not offer.

Juice/ Smoothie Bars: I’m a huge fan, but it’s even better to make it yourself. Heres why:

You need to drink the juice or smoothie right away in order to obtain the majority of the nutrients you would from actually eating the fruit whole.  The longer you wait, the quicker the nutrients and vitamins disappear from the drink.  Sure it still tastes amazing, but you aren’t receiving all the health benefits.  At Jugofresh, they bottle all of their juices.  Yes, they keep it refrigerated, and yes, they taste good, but how fresh really are they? Some of the juices they keep for several days aka most of the nutrients are definitely gone.  I understand if you don’t have a blender or juicer, but you can find some inexpensive ways to make your own drinks.  Personally, I prefer the Vitamix and making smoothies rather than juices.  With juicing, you automatically lose major nutrients because the skin isn’t used.  In a smoothie, you keep of the juices, and you can add coconut water, coconut milk, or really anything you want.

Prepared foods section:

Whether you’re at Whole Foods, Fairway Market, Sunac or any other place with prepared foods, most of the food served, are foods you can make yourself.  Once again, you do not know how much oil they cook it in, and you don’t know how long it’s been sitting there for.  For example the mac and cheese.  Everyone knows how amazing it is, but you can make it even better by making it yourself.  The Whole Foods mac and cheese, is amazing but have you ever thought of adding truffle to it at home? 😉

Oh, and don’t even get me start on how people think gluten-free diets are healthier.  LOL.

Good luck on this and I’ll be posting recipes on here soon,

One of my best friends, Ariella Omar, a freshman at Manhattan College, started the Instagram @heavenlyexquisite over 36 weeks ago (9 months ago).  Her passion for good-tasting and good-looking food started WAY before that though. Her father owns many bagel stores all over New Jersey, aka HEAVENLY GODLY FOOD WITHIN MY REACH.  My house happens to be located approximately 4 minutes away from one of his shops, called Bagel Nosh, in Franklin Lakes… Am I lucky or what?  I guarantee you, you will not find another bagel that tastes like his (secret recipe).

Back to the star of the show, Ariella, she started baking and created her own dishes since a young age.  When Ariella and I were in high school, most of our time spent together, we would bake delicious tasting and beautiful appearing goods, such as this nutella pizza:

We made the rookie mistake of putting the fruit on BEFORE we baked the pizza… But obviously it was still amazing 🙂

Our next try though… FIRE:

Fast forward a few years, Ariella has majorly upped her instagame via @heavenlyexquisite, first featuring her own creations:
