7 Reasons Why University of Miami is Amazing

Since my freshman year of high school, I wanted to go to NYU.  I didn’t want the typical college experience of living in a town in the middle of nowhere, frat parties, campus, etc.  Through out high school, I would visit my friends at NYU and have the best time.  I knew that was where I WANTED to be.

And then everything changed… Obviously, since I am a junior at the University of MIAMI. In February of my Junior year of high school, I was in Miami and my mom convinced me to take a campus tour of the U.  Not to sound cheesy or cliché, but Being on the campus for the first time, I literally felt this was the place I NEEDED to be.

I realized that New York City will always be there.  I live on the outskirts of the city in New Jersey, about 30 minutes away.  I’m there all the time, I work there in the summers, and there will always be grad school, and work opportunities there when I graduate.  i needed to move away, and be on my own for some time.  I needed to learn to rely on myself and no one else.  I needed to experience life without the close proximity of my parents.

I visited two more times after that, during my senior year, to ensure that I was making the right choice.  I met with the Dean of the Business School to discuss the courses and academics.

Come freshman year, I regretted my decision.  Whenever something went wrong I would say, “I wish I went to NYU. I’m transferring.”  I would blame it on University of Miami, instead of myself and the situation. Especially when I wasn’t in a sorority and all of my friends were, (see My Take on Sororities), when I would end up alone at a tailgate because there was no cell service, when I got burned by walking into a grill, and when I got into arguments with friends, I wanted to pack up all my things and evacuate.

Advice to freshman: give yourself more time before you shut something out and make a decision.  I didn’t act on my feelings, and I am so grateful for that because I am still at the best school in the country, in my opinion.

Even after all the not-so-good experiences I went through each semester being here, I would not want to be at any other school.  Here is why UMiami has the best of ALL worlds:

1. Academics

  • Great professors
  • Strong programs

2. Health

  • Personally, I feel better physically when I am in warm weather.  I have many injuries and the heat really helps me when I’m in pain.  Being in New Jersey in the winter, after I had jaw surgery was miserable, because the cold kept locking my jaw further.
  • Vitamin D
  • I mentally feel better when it is warm and sunny, rather than cold, snowy and rainy.

3. International

  • People in Miami are from all over the world.  You can meet so many different people, and learn new languages and be able to practice it in Miami.

4. City

  • Unlike most schools, UM is not in the middle of nowhere.
  • Although the campus is located in Coral Gables, it is only 10-15 minutes away from Brickell, and 20 from South Beach.
  • Opportunities for work after you graduate
  • More activities

5. Sports

  • Miami is a large Sports Market
  • Football, Hockey (45 min North of Miami), Baseball, Tennis (Sony Open), etc.

6. Can’t Be Mad On Vacation

  • Kanye said it best. Miami is one of the top vacation spots in the US, so if you’re in town or attending school here, there is nothing that can make you THAT mad.
  • You can go to the beach whenever you want, or the pool.

7. LIVin in Miami

  • Miami is one of the best places for Nightlife.
  • Endless Options
    • Clubs, lounges, bars, restaurants, beach, boats, frat parties, pool parties, Sports games

If you’re deciding on what college to go to, definitely check out the U.

Tailgates at the University of Miami

The tailgate experience at the []_[] is like no other.  No matter if you like football, or even sports for that matter, everyone still comes together to do one of the things we do best: TAILGATE aka party, dance on trucks, shot-gun beers, scream all the chants, shower in beer, run around and get as many hot dogs as possible, etc. …Okay maybe the last one is just me. Scroll to the bottom if you wanna hear about the food/ my favorite part.

  • Warning: if the game starts at 12pm, you need to be awake at 6 am.
  • Obviously, you need to have a pre pre with your friends, whether you’re at the dorms, apartments or in a house
  • Go to your favorite frat, or the red road pool to pregame

Transportation to Sunlife:

Fortunately/ Unfortunately, depending on whether you get car sick or not, Sunlife Stadium is about 45 minutes away.  This is different than most colleges, as students usually pregame and then walk to their stadium.

WARNING: do not try to walk to Sunlife after reading this…

  • take the buses that show up to the pregame
    • Yes, they are called “school bus[es],” but once you step inside them, nothing about it screams “school,” except for the []_[] on everyone’s shirts
  • Uber with your friends if you don’t want to be “ratchet”
  • Hop in someone’s car or truck who’s driving to the game (I do this at least once a season)

Actual Tailgate:

Okay so you finally arrive at Sunlife, where do you go? How do you find the frats in the middle of a huge parking lot?

Well, if you go on the buses, you just follow the stampede.  But if you’re in an uber or car, you need to find out from friends in the frat, what section you are in.  This got easier though last season, when Sunlife decided to place all student tailgates in the grass, far away from the stadium because apparently we are animals.  While this allows for more safety (we will discuss this below), why do we even go to Sunlife? We might as well use the grass fields at Coral Gables High School across from Merrick Park, party on the Green outside the library, or even rent out a farm/ barn if they’re gonna treat us as animals.  We’ll see how it is this season.  Either way, it’s still a sick time.

DJs on the trucks for every frat

Back to the topic of tailgate safety though…

Exhibit A:

So painful. I still have a scar.

Exhibit B:

My Friend Emily’s Scar. Ouch.
  • Do not:
    • Fall off the truck.
    • Fall on your face.
    • Just do not fall, okay?
    • Burn yourself with a hot dog.
    • Get arrested by the cops on bikes.
    • Get sunburned, especially while wearing a sticker on your face.

Side note: None of the above mentioned ever happened to me.

  • Tailgaters making hotdogs: you can buy hotdogs from them
  • Frats sometimes bring a grill
  • Inside Sunlife:
    • Gyros
    • Chicken Tenders
    • Burgers
    • Ice-cream

  • Once the game starts, I usually go home, as do most of my friends.
  • Or we go home on the nice coach buses that the school provides you during half time.
  • Once in awhile, I will go inside the stadium to get a gyro or dip n dots ice-cream.
  • UNLESS, it’s a big game day aka UF or FSU

Post-Game (haha punny):

  • Shake Shack, Villagio, anywhere
  • Swimming
  • House or apt
  • Chill
  • GO TO SLEEP for the rest of the day

And then you get up and rally because you’re going out. 😉

Have fun on the first tailgate of the season & stay SAFE!

7 Night-time Activites @ the University of Miami

Obviously, we’re all, well most of us, are at college to get an education.  But what comes with education, is the partying and activities that go on while you’re there.  Most people aren’t able to balance this, or rather prioritize education over partying, but those who do, end up having the best college experience while learning and getting good grades.  Let’s break things down for going out at UM:

1. South Beach–

  • Wall: my personal favorite
  • Liv: Ratchet unless you go with a huge crew
  • Bodega: the new spot, combo on bardot/ rec room/ mokai
  • Basement @ Edition Hotel
  • Rec Room: Chill, thursday nights Hip Hop night
  • Mynt: International, fun with a crew
  • Mokai – RIP since it was renovated and shut down for 2 monthsIMG_4081

2. Brickell / Downtown / Midtown–

  • Bardot- Chill spot, good vibes, need good crew/ table
  • Blue Martini
  • Bars: American Social, Blackbird

3. Grove– (my least favorite out of everything)

Many people go here, many people don’t.  I am of those people who don’t. I haven’t been there this semester, and last semester I went once, but to get pizza from NY Pizza in my pajamas, but ended up going to Fat Tuesday’s

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 1.59.28 PM

Fat Tuesday’s- fun with a good crew

Moes- you could possibly get diabetes from Moose Juice. Way too packed. Definitely will get your phone/ money stolen

Tavern- smaller than Moe’s aka more packed

4. Frat Parties– Fun.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 2.31.55 PM

* Frat Pool Parties– So Fun ( I know this isn’t @ night but it’s still necessary to include)

5. Pregames–

Cafe Abracci

YardHouse (fast food)

Mariposa (Meiman Marcus Merrick Park)

Whisk (Sunset)

Nordstorm Café

*Tailgates– These aren’t at night but they’re THAT GOOD that I needed to include them.

Warning: can get pretty ratchet, sunlife is far, BUT THEY ARE SO FUN IF YOU DO IT RIGHT

PG’s at the frats, houses, or Red Road Pool

Buses to the Game, hop in someone’s car, or take Uber

I don’t usually go to the games. unless it’s FSU, UF or I’m hungry and want to get a hotdog/ Gyro/ Dip n Dots

7. Chilling– it’s nice to have friends, especially older ones if you are a freshman

Your apartment, house

Your friends apt or house
